AN EVERYDAY PARTY - MEGAN CLARK-BAGNALL

MeganClarkBagnall_AnEverydayParty_800x400

Party: Mon 1 June 2015, 4.30 – 6.30pm
An Everyday Party is a surprise party (shhh!) to celebrate those who make a daily journey
through the Bearpit! It's a party that commends their commute and marks a moment in the
day that is usually instantly forgotten. Watch the space steadily fill with the spirit of the
funfair and join Megan to surprise passersby, as she takes us back in time to when the
Bearpit was a place of destination, a trading post and a flurry of excitement.
The party is free and open to all. Just turn up!

Megan Clark-Bagnall is a BV Studio studio holder (M2) and makes work that is accessible,
fun, and humorous and although her projects often seem a little ridiculous, they are made with complete
sincerity. Megan‘s interests include scale and size, the present day, the past and the future, the kitsch and the
mundane. She creates large-scale installations, sensory experiences, almost-performances, events and
happenings. She often makes things by hand, which gives some of her projects a D.I.Y. aesthetic.

Exhibition text: As Far As The Archives Can See

The world stops again and watches itself watching a breach in the seamless surface of a world of equal access and ability to reproduce. What else is there but to record and store? Where else to look but back at ourselves?

In a world of balloon-enabled connectivity and donkey-driven solar panel-powered water purification units, our product is our progress.

The couple on the beach turns to face the setting sun. Each with one arm raised they capture the moment forever. A thousand years later that sunset has become a landmark; the rocks a monument to a moment in time that was never really a moment at all.

The trees remain. And the image’s unbroken reign stretches back as far as the archives can see.

A watermarked photograph of a 3D printed copyright symbol is undone by a screenshot, a copy and paste, and a picture of a repost of a blog about a tweet about a tweet about copyright and then it’s lost.

Are they crease-marks on the screen?

We build that we may continue to call ourselves builders, and we store that we may recall how we built, from Egypt to Lasceaux, in formats that neither human nor artificial brain could ever fathom.

A wave looks the same from above and below.

What’s yours is mine.

Paris Higgins at 44AD, Bath

'Days of Scorpio' is a solo exhibition by Paris Higgins from G9 at 44AD in Bath until 21st July.

Days of Scorpio brings together a selection of recent work by Higgins, which present a polarity between two conceptual and stylistic approaches to painting. Despite a clear divergence, both approaches are grounded in the same theoretical standpoint: a critical engagement with painterly discourse in relation to contemporary visual culture, seeking to deal specifically with notions of signification and aesthetic language.

The paintings are indirectly tied to cinematic and musical culture through the mediated use of certain visual phenomena that can be associated with both. Some reformat that which they draw upon, abstracting, not literally, but on the level of interpretation. And in doing so signification becomes detached, established visual associations, which are bound up in both the recollection and comprehension of a wider cultural sphere are placed in a state of antagonism.

Others follow a process of aesthetic simulation, drawing on relatable themes in an attempt to expand on an existing cycle of mimicry, which although specific (associated directly with the photography of William Eggleston in relation to his influence on cinematography), stands as an example among many.

What can be said of all the work on show is that the painting process itself not only informs the production of these displaced visual products, but is responsible for building a visual language that is significantly separate from the sources it initially draws upon. The paintings thrive because of this; they facilitate fantasy, not through illusion but through their ability to allude with a potency, which is quite inconspicuous. The paintings don’t operate by proxy; they manufacture their own meaning, their own coherence, and in doing so become inherently ambivalent. Here lies their irony; as such a process is laden in contradiction.

This aspect of the work indirectly points to a defining characteristic of contemporary visual culture: incongruity as a consequence of mass signification, and in this, the seaming inevitability of a variable yet structured understanding informed and dictated by individual identity.

Like A Monkey With A Miniature Cymbal

BV artists Zanne Andrea, Martyn Cross and Brendan Lancaster will travel to Aid & Abet in Cambridge this July to take part in Like A Monkey With A Miniature Cymbal, a large group exhibition of UK based artists curated by Mermaid & Monster.

Like a Monkey with a Miniature Cymbal is an exhibition about obsessions, repetition, perseverance and the drive needed to carry on, as an artist, or in any way of life. This can be found in the subject matter and methods used, as well as in knowing (or sometimes not knowing) what you are doing, or where you are going. What is the intense belief or energy needed to make you get out of bed each day, often to little attention or small reward? Could it be that despite all of life’s trials and tribulations, it could be, whisper it, ‘fun’… that you actually enjoy it, like a monkey with a miniature cymbal.

Zanne Andrea | Darren Banks | Nicholas Carrick | Rhys Coren | Martyn Cross |  Gordon Dalton | Lloyd Durling | Tracey Eastham | Thomas Goddard | Anton Goldenstein | S Mark Gubb | Pat Flynn | Neal Jones | Brendan Lancaster | Marion Piper | Yelena Popova | Laura Reeves | Anthony Shapland | Ian Watson
